Understanding Politics

WANA: We may not have it all together, but together we have it all.

J. Holmes, in Author Piper Bayard’s fine blog, keeps us all up to date on current events and international affairs, but that doesn’t inform us about the politics that go on behind those events. I thought I’d correct that by sharing some political wisdom with you. I think Will Rogers once said that politics is like the weather—everyone talks about it, but no one ever does anything about it. Maybe the wisdom shared by various people below will shed some light on that.

* The problem with political jokes is they get elected. ~Henry Cate, VII

* We hang the petty thieves and appoint the great ones to public office. ~Aesop

* If we got one-tenth of what was promised to us in these acceptance speeches there wouldn’t be any inducement to go to heaven. ~Will Rogers

* Those who are too smart to engage in politics are punished by being governed by those who are dumber. ~Plato

* Politicians are the same all over. They promise to build a bridge even where there is no river. ~Nikita Khrushchev

* When I was a boy I was told that anybody could become President; I’m beginning to believe it. ~Clarence Darrow

* Why pay money to have your family tree traced; go into politics and your opponents will do it for you. ~Author Unknown

* If God wanted us to vote, he would have given us candidates. ~Jay Leno

* Politics is the gentle art of getting votes from the poor and campaign funds from the rich, by promising to protect each from the other. ~Oscar Ameringer

* A politician is a fellow who will lay down YOUR life for his country. ~ Texas Guinan

* Any American who is prepared to run for president should automatically, by definition, be disqualified from ever doing so. ~Gore Vidal

* I have come to the conclusion that politics is too serious a matter to be left to the politicians. ~Charles de Gaulle

* Instead of giving a politician the keys to the city, it might be better to change the locks. ~Doug Larson

* Don’t vote, it only encourages them. ~Author Unknown

This all brings up a new word and its definition, which I found in another email:

Ineptocracy
Ineptocracy (in-ep-toc’-ra-cy) – a system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed, are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers.

I hope I’ve contributed to your education about politics this morning. I know you’ll find the wisdom in this piece invaluable.

A graduate of Duke University, he spent 42 years as a health insurance agent. Most of that career was spent in Texas, but for a few years he traveled many other states. He started writing about 20 years ago, and has six unpublished novels to use as primers on how NOT to write fiction. Since his retirement from insurance a few years ago, he has devoted his time to helping Kristen Lamb start Warrior Writers’ Boot Camp and trying to learn to write a successful novel himself.

  3. When I was younger, I thought that politician and prostitution were the same thing (the words sounded the same to little me, so they must mean the same right?). I grew up and found out I was right all along!
